Tell the hands apart. Short hand for the hour, long hand for minutes, thin hand for seconds — by length, not by colour.
Read the four landmarks. O’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, on any hour of the dial.
Watch the hour hand travel. It creeps between numbers, so half past 4 still reads 4.
Name the coming hour. Quarter to 5 sits just before 5, not after 4.
Count minutes by fives. Each number on the face is five minutes.
